The GTTA Caleta Hotel Closed Championship

This tournament proved to be quite successful with a total of 62 entries spread across 6 events, the largest number that the GTTA have held in recent years.

The Closed Championship was primarily held to give new members match-play experience, mingling with the more seasoned GTTA players. As a result a number of new players have burst onto the local table tennis scene.

The Under 18's had a crop of eager youngsters showing off their skills. Julian Soiza beat Jyan Duo in the final with a total score of 2-11, 11-8, 11-9.

This was followed by the Ladies Doubles Final which was won by Alexandra Zlatea and Maria Patel scoring 11-4, 11-5 over Annabelle Mor-Codali and Sangita Assomull.

In the Mixed Doubles Alex Zlatea was again successful, this time partnering Roy Pearce to beat Jo Osborne and Joe Martinez with a close game of 6-11, 11-9, 11-9.

The Men's Doubles Final was a thriller in which Joe Martinez and Paul Camilleri came back from 2 sets down to beat Danny Garcia and James Neish with final scores of 10-12, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-6.

The Men's Singles final saw two of Gibraltar's top players competing in some amazing rallies. Fiodor Veresciaka came through defeating a slightly off-colour Danny Garcia 11-7, 11-9, 11-9.

In the last match of the tournament Alex Zlatea completed a successful treble by beating Natalia Cassaglia 11-5, 11-3, 13-11 in the Ladies'singles final.

A sucsess of an event with promise of more to come. The GTTA would also like to thank all its Members (and their partners), Volunteers and Athletes as well as the parents/carers of those involved in the sport for their contribution and dedication!
